Are you a parent and are looking for the perfect “must read” this
summer? Look no further than today’s article in the Asbury Park Press
by Andrea Clurfeld. There’s only one thing you need to do; substitute
your neighborhood, city, and state, name for Monmouth, Asbury, and New
Jersey. What she describes is happening all across America. It’s the
drug explosion that people are not prepared for, or even willing to
listen to.
Many parents want to make marijuana the culprit in
our society. And while it remains extremely popular, and easy to
obtain from middle school up, it’s not the big bad wolf that’s tapping
on your child’s shoulder. The Teensavers Team has been talking to
parents about prescription drug abuse and heroin addiction. Most
parents don’t give it much thought. They would never picture their
teen with a needle, injecting themselves with heroin, while hanging out
with that unsavory crowd. The truth is, you don’t have to inject
heroin to use it. There are easier ways to take it. And the fix
comes at a much cheaper price than other opiates.
Clurfeld
explains that kids start sneaking $50-$70 Oxycontin or Percocet pills
from the family medicine cabinet. But once that well runs dry, teens
can’t afford to cough up that kind of cash for a pill. So they go for
option number 2; A $7 bag of heroin.
As parents you have a first line of defense; communication. The second line of defense is a teensavers home drug test kit.
